- Child labor > Both sexes: Percentage of all children 5-11 years old who do at least one hour of econmic activity a week or at least 28 hours of househould chores. Children 12-14 are included if they peformed at least 14 hours of economic activiy or at least 28 hours of household chores.
- Firing cost > Weeks of wages: Firing cost is the cost of advance notice requirements, severance payments, and penalties due when terminating a redundant worker, expressed in weekly wages. One month is recorded as 4 1/3 weeks.

This index is the average of three subindexes: a difficulty of hiring index, a rigidity of hours index, and a difficulty of firing index.
