Definitions

  • Value added in construction: Gross value added is defined as output minus intermediate consumption and equals the sum of employee compensation, gross operating surplus of government and corporations, gross mixed income of unincorporated enterprises and taxes less subsidies on production and imports, except for net taxes on products. The shares of each sector are calculated by dividing the value added in each sector by total value added. Total value added is less than GDP because it excludes value-added tax (VAT) and other product taxes.

    In the following analysis, tables and graphs for some industry branches are grouped together as follows: “industry” consists of mining and quarrying, manufacturing, and production and distribution of electricity, gas and water; “trade” consists of retail and wholesale trade and repair services; “real estate” covers rents for dwellings including the imputed rents of owner-occupiers; “government” includes public administration, law and order and defence.
